Celebrate Manila Hotel’s Malunggay Festival

Time and again, our grandmas have told us that malunggay is good for blood circulation and helps in producing milk in the case of lactating mothers. What we didn’t know was that aside from these, malunggay, or scientifically known as moringa oelifera and known to the rest of the world as the moringa leaf, is so full of nutrients and vitamins that an ounce of it in its powdered form is more potent than a multivitamin capsule. In fact, it has the same amount of Vitamin C as seven oranges, has four times more calcium than milk, contains three times the potassium in bananas, four times the Vitamin A in carrots and three times the iron in spinach. All these nutrients are found in those petite green leaves that most of us have in our backyards.

Dubbed by experts as the “miracle vegetable,” its myriad of health benefits is truly remarkable, earning the respect of professionals in the medical field. Research shows that regular ingestion of malunggay leaves helps neutralize and negate the effects of carcinogens, thereby minimizing the chance of acquiring cancer. It also boosts the immune system, regulates blood cholesterol and glucose levels, and helps the body in battling stress, among others.

These health benefits were not lost on Atty. Jose D. Lina, President of Manila Hotel. It was he who spearheaded the Manila Hotel’s Malunggay Festival which features the collaboration of the Hotel’s well-known Café Ilang Ilang and its newly-opened Chinese Restaurant, the Mabuhay Palace. “Malunggay leaves are very cheap, very easy to grow in our backyards, and yet so full of vitamins and minerals. Manila Hotel came up with this campaign to educate more people about these health benefits and to bring the message across that malunggay can be used as a main ingredient in cooking a variety of great tasting dishes. Moreover, it is a good source of livelihood for small to medium enterprise,” said Atty. Lina.

From May 25 to May 31, we can all experience the extraordinary flavor that Manila Hotel’s master chefs have infused in malunggay. Take the natural nutrients found in malunggay and combine it with Manila Hotel’s expertise and century-old knowledge in whipping up world-class dishes, and what you have is a food festival that will pleasantly surprise you, as it is both healthy and extremely delicious.

Nian Liwanag-Rigor, Asst. Vice President for Corporate Communications of Manila Hotel invites everyone to participate in this rare and exclusive dining experience. “These days it can be a challenge to unite healthy eating with great dining. But in our Malunggay Festival, we bring you the most mouthwatering dishes and desserts that are also extremely good for our bodies because they are made with malunggay. We make healthy dining delicious at the Manila Hotel.”
